Our team of experienced optometrists are certified by the National Board of Examiners of Optometry and licensed through the State of Illinois. They are certified in the diagnosis and treatment of most eye diseases, prescription of glasses, and fitting of specialty contact lenses. They can also help you identify any possible medical conditions associated with your eyes.
Dr. Lieberman is the founder of Industrial Optical Services, Inc. and co-founder of Spex. He has been practicing Optometry since his graduation from the Illinois College of Optometry in 1988. He is currently an active member of the American Optometric Association as well as the Illinois Optometric Association. Dr. Lieberman was a founding member of United Eye Care Providers and served as a board member for 4 years. He also sat on the board of directors for I Care International, a non profit organization that provides eye care to the underprivileged all around the world. Dr. Lieberman has led numerous Eye Care missions on their behalf throughout Mexico. In 1992, he founded and administered the Adopt a School Program in Evanston, Illinois. This program provided access to free eye care and eyewear to underprivileged children within their community.
Lauren Curosh, OD received her doctorate degree from the Illinois College of Optometry where she was chosen to be a member of the Gold Key, Tomb & Key and Beta Sigma Kappa Honor Societies. Dr. Curosh completed her clinical rotations at The Chicago Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired, the Illinois Eye Institute in Chicago, Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii, Newington VA Hospital in Connecticut, and Merrimack Vision Care in New Hampshire. Prior to working towards her doctorate, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from DePauw University where she was a four-year varsity letter winner as a softball pitcher. Dr. Curosh is active in the Lions Club, the Illinois Optometric Association, has participated in Special Olympics vision screenings, and volunteered as a Little League coach. Dr. Curosh enjoys working with children and provides comprehensive eye examinations to patients of all ages. Her skills include fitting both gas permeable and soft contact lenses, with a special area of interest in multifocal lenses.
Dr. John Geevarghese provides comprehensive eye exams for all ages, contact lens fittings including soft, gas permeable, toric and multifocal lenses as well as medical management and referral services for various ocular conditions and surgical eye care, Laser Vision Correction (LASIK) Consultation and Co-management. He graduated from the Honors College at the University of Illinois at Chicago with a Bachelor in Biological Sciences in 1999. Dr. Geevarghese received his Doctor of Optometry degree from the Illinois College of Optometry in May of 2004. During his education, he completed internships for primary eye care and ocular disease management at VA Connecticut, Newington Campus, contact lens and pediatric at Illinois Eye Institute and low vision exams at the VA Blind Rehabilitation Center in West Haven, CT. Dr. Geevarghese is an active member of the Illinois Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association.
Carla Iafigliola, O.D. studied research biology at Loras College and went on to receive her doctorate at the Illinois College of Optometry in 1997. She was a member of the Tomb and Key Honor Society and completed her externships at Illinois Masonic Medical Center, Sydney Hillman Health Center, and University of Chicago pediatrics in Chicago. She was invited to do a residency at the Illinois Eye Institute with and emphasis on ocular disease. During her residency she was able to work closely with the Ophthalmology team at the University of Chicago.
Dr. Iafigliola has been in practice for 16 years. She enjoys practicing currently in Grayslake, working with the latest technology to better evaluate ocular disease, E-prescribing directly with local pharmacies, and fitting the latest in contact lenses including multifocal, gas permeable, and specialty lenses. On her time away from the office Dr. Iafigliola enjoys spending time with her children on the soccer field. Her hobbies include cooking, decorating, and researching holistic nutritional health.
Dr. Natalie Lieberman majored in zoology and graduated Michigan State University in 1983; she has been practicing optometry since her graduation from the Illinois College of Optometry in 1988. She was a board member, and participated in mission work, with I Care International, a non-profit organization that provides free eye care to underprivileged people in various countries in order that they lead more productive and rewarding lives.
Dr. Lieberman was a member of the Community Emergency Response Team of So. Lake County in Illinois and hopes to continue this in Hilton Head. In 1992, she helped to conceptualize, found and initiate the Adopt a School Program in Evanston, Illinois. This program provided access to free eye care services and eyewear products to underprivileged children within the community. Dr. Lieberman is married and has two sons, two dogs, and a horse; she enjoys the outdoors and abundant wildlife native to Hilton Head. When not practicing optometry, she can be found enjoying horseback riding, kayaking, and boating.

Lindsay Luker has been an optomtetrist with Spex since May 2008. Dr. Luker received her Bachelor of Arts from Illinois Wesleyan University in 2001. In 2005, she graduated with her doctorate degree from the Illinois College of Optometry, in which she earned many honorary and academic awards. Volunteering her skills as an optometrist to provide eye exams through VOSH (Volunteering Optometric Services to Humanity) and Gift of Sight has brought her to wonderful places in the world such as Honduras and Mexico. Currently Dr. Luker is a member of the Illinois Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association. When not practicing optometry, she thoroughly enjoys practicing yoga, stand up paddleboard, and harmonica.
Danielle Nesbitt, O.D. graduated Cum Laude from Illinois College of Optometry with her Doctor of Optometry in 2013. In 2009 Danielle graduated with Honors from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with her Bachelors of Science in Kinesiology and a minor in Chemistry. While at the College of Optometry she worked in many specialty clinics finding an interest in pediatrics, contact lenses and ocular disease. Dr. Nesbitt provides comprehensive eye exams for all ages and is a member of the Illinois Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association. Beyond Dr. Nesbitt’s passion for optometry is her love of hockey. Danielle played hockey in high school and college. (center and right wing)
Dr. Nellie Plummer completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She graduated magna cum laude from Illinois College of Optometry, where she was a member of Tomb and Key honor society and Beta Sigma Kappa honor society. Dr. Plummer has special interest in pediatric optometry and treatment of ocular disease along with specialty contact lens fits. She currently resides in Chicago with her husband and their Shih Tzu, Wrigley.
Gina Piper, O.D. studied Biology at the University of Illinois Chicago, and subsequently graduated from the Illinois College of Optometry in 1996 with a focus on Low Vision, Pediatrics and Primary & Advanced Care. In 1996, Dr. Piper completed her externship at Illinois Masonic Hospital in Chicago and the Sidney Hillman Center in Chicago. She was the recipient of the Silor Digital CRP Award in 1996. For over 17 years Dr. Piper has worked in primary care optometry; she has been part of the Spex family for eight years. Dr. Piper is an expert in fitting gas permeable and soft bifocal contact lenses as well as specialty contacts for correcting high amounts of astigmatism; she offers adult and pediatric patients expert refractions, contact lens consultations, and is experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of many ocular medical conditions. When not working, Dr. Piper can be found with her husband and three sons on summer evenings enjoying neighborhood Little League games.
Sanela Puskar, OD graduated with a Bachelors degree from Augustana College and obtained her Doctor of Optometry degree from the Illinois College of Optometry in 2004. Dr. Puskar’s current clinical experience involves primary care optometry with a wide range of patients from young children to mature adults. She treats ocular disease, provides comprehensive eye exams, and specializes in fitting multifocal and gas permeable contact lenses. Dr. Puskar is a member of the American Optometric Association and the Illinois Optometric Association. She enjoys travel, running along the lake, and can speak Bosnian and Serbo-Croatian.

Dr. Carrie Roitstein began her career in Optometry as an Optician at age 19 while in college. She founded the Pre-Optometry Club at University of Illinois as an undergrad student. After graduating with a Bachelors degree from the University of Illinois, Champaign, she then received her doctorate from the Illinois College of Optometry in 2000.
Dr. Roitstein’s 7 years of optician experience through college helped land her first job as an Optometrist for owner, Dr. Daniel Lieberman, of Daniel Lieberman & Associates, then of 3 offices. Today, Dr. Roitstein acts as Managing Doctor for all Spex locations. Dr. Roitstein’s responsibilities as managing doctor cannot keep her away from her passion of patient care; she specializes in difficult contact lenses fits in the Loop office while using the most up-to-date technology to provide the best medical care to her patients. As managing doctor, Dr. Roitstein continues to bring the newest technology to the doctors of Spex in order to be the best Optometric practice in the Chicago and area.
Dr. Roitstein is an active member of the Illinois Optometric Association, the American Optometric Association, Infant See program, Anshe Emet Synagogue, Friends of the Israeli Defense Forces. She has volunteered her time on Eyecare Missions to Mexico with Eye Care International and mentored for the Boys and Girls Club of Chicago. Her hobbies include traveling, running, and painting.
Dr. Patricia Salazar provides comprehensive eye exams for all ages, including contact lens fittings for soft spherical, toric, multifocal and gas permeable lenses, as well as medical management and referral services. She graduated from the University of California at Davis with a Bachelor of Sciences degree in Psychology with an emphasis in Biology in 2005, and received her Doctor of Optometry degree from the New England College of Optometry in 2010. After graduating, Dr. Salazar spent four years as an active duty Navy Lieutenant stationed at Naval Station Great Lakes (now part of the Lovell Federal Health Care Center), including six months aboard the USNS COMFORT where she conducted eye exams throughout Central and South America. Today, she continues her federal service within the Navy Reserves. Dr. Salazar is an active member of the Illinois Optometric Association, the American Optometric Association, and the Armed Forces Optometric Society.
Dr. Alexandra Talaber is a University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Illinois College of Optometry alumnus. She completed a residency in Vision Rehabilitation and Therapy at the State University of New York, where she treated visual disorders related to acquired brain injuries and learning-related vision disorders in the pediatric population.
Dr. Talaber has a special interest in treating people with Computer Vision Syndrome, Dry Eye Syndrome, and eye teaming/eye focusing disorders. She researches and lectures on how vision impacts work and school performance in young adults through the College of Optometrists in Vision Development. When Dr. Talaber is not practicing optometry, she teaches Forrest Yoga classes and enjoys photographing the lovely city of Chicago.
Ashley Varakalayil, O.D. completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where she graduated with her Bachelors in Science in Community Health with a concentration in Health Administration. She went on to complete her doctorate degree at Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee where she was a member of SVOSH (Students Volunteering Optometric Services to Humanity) and provided free eye care services in Jamaica. Dr. Varakalayil completed her externship training in primary eye care in Dallas, Texas, in ocular disease at the Jesse Brown VAMC in Chicago, and in pediatrics and low vision in Memphis, Tennessee. When not working, she teaches dance classes and enjoys cooking.
Marnee Velick, OD focuses on providing comprehensive eye examinations with special areas of interest in pediatrics, contact lenses and medical management of ocular disease. She has been with Spex for 10 years and has practiced at many of their locations. Dr. Velick is currently practicing in Winnetka. She has been an active member of the American Optometric Association for over 20 years. Dr. Velick also holds a position on the Board of Hadassah Chicago-North Shore Chapter. Dr. Velick graduated from the Illinois College of Optometry in 1996 where she also earned a Bachelor of Science in Visual Science. Dr. Velick holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Toronto. Dr. Velick resides in Highland Park with her husband and three children; she can often be found at the local hockey arena or gymnastics meet cheering on her children.
